Liberty A-League report: Victory 2-2 Sydney

Liberty A-League report: Victory 2-2 Sydney

Melbourne Victory continued its unbeaten run in the Liberty A-League, fighting back to earn a 2-2 draw against Sydney FC on Wednesday.

Summary

Victory fell 2-0 behind after goals from Princess Ibini and Remy Siemsen at City Vista Pavilion and Sports Field before producing a dramatic comeback.

Lia Privitelli pulled a goal back before Catherine Zimmerman volleyed in an equaliser in additional time, stretching Victory’s unbeaten run to five games.

Sydney made the better start and Rachel Lowe fired wide in the 12th minute, while Brooke Hendrix was needed to make a clearance off the line.

Most of Sydney’s chances were coming from difficult areas, with Ibini shooting wide and Natalie Tobin hitting the side-netting.

Victory midfielder Alana Murphy tested Sydney goalkeeper Jada Whyman with a long-range free-kick before Casey Dumont made a comfortable save to deny Remy Siemsen nine minutes before half-time.

Sydney opened the scoring five minutes into the second half as Ibini cut in from the left before squeezing in a finish to make it 1-0.

The visitor doubled the lead on the hour-mark through Siemsen, who headed in a Charlize Rule cross.

Victory pulled a goal back with just over 20 minutes remaining, Privitelli sliding in after Tobin deflected a Courtney Nevin cross towards her own goal.

Alex Chidiac almost brought a fast-finishing Victory level, but Whyman made a great save to tip the midfielder’s 20-yard effort over.

Dumont made a wonderful stop to keep out Siemen from close range before Zimmerman blasted over from a promising position.

But Zimmerman did find an equaliser in additional time.

The forward volleyed in superbly from inside the area after a corner went uncleared in the 92nd minute.

Key moment

What they said – Zimmerman

on scoring…
“We wanted to score, that’s the main thing, that’s how you win games. To get two in on them today was pretty good.”

on unbeaten run…
“I think we haven’t lost in a while so we just want to keep this momentum going, hopefully get back on the winning side of things against Perth.”

Player in focus

Introduced at half-time, Privitelli produced an excellent performance. Playing in attack, she scored and provided Victory with plenty of much-needed energy to fight back and earn a point.
