Popovic ahead of Victory v Phoenix

Melbourne Victory coach Tony Popovic spoke on Thursday morning ahead of Friday night’s clash with Wellington at AAMI Park.

The fixture is Victory’s final home game of the regular season before facing Sydney FC away next week to wrap up their Finals preparations.

Popovic on squad health...

“We pulled up quite well. Obviously, you expect players to be tired after this very busy period…but from what I saw yesterday (at training) the boys are really excited and ready for this game.”

“We want to put on a good show and give people an enjoyable weekend.”

on the importance of Friday night’s game…

“We want to finish the regular season on a high in front of members and fans, which will put us in a strong position on the table.”

“If we can win, it secures us a top-three finish and then we can see what else is possible thereafter, but we need to get the job done first.”

on preparing for Wellington…

“They have a lot on the line as well. It will be tough, they defended very well last week to get a result.”

“They’ve recently changed the way they play in terms of their structure and their defensive setup, so we have to be patient and make sure we limit their opportunities on the counter attack.”

“If we play our game and play the moments correctly, we’re confident we can get the three points.”
