Ministers and dignitaries in Australia throw their support behind the Afghan Women’s Team and their endeavours to play international football once again.
With the world’s eyes on Australia amidst the biggest single-sport tournament the country has ever seen, the Women’s World Cup, the Afghan Women’s Team (AWT) continue to pursue their goal of being recognised internationally once again.
In Brisbane on Thursday, Australian Government officials attended a closed kick-around with the AWT in a show of support for the team’s dream of playing on the international stage.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Tim Watts and Minister for Sport and Aged Care Anika Wells all made an appearances with Senator Wong even taking a penalty kick.
While her football skills were not quite at the elite level of the AWT, the visit sent a strong message.
“We will continue to work with others, as I say to shape the world for the better, that’s what we’ll try and do, and it was a real privilege to meet with these young women and listen to some of their stories and I hope that we can keep engaging with them,” the Senator said.
