“I’m just so proud of the group”: Popovic following Wellington win

Head coach Tony Popovic was happy with his side’s performance in Saturday afternoon’s win against Wellington Phoenix, although remains focused on preparing for more critical games over the next week.

On the performance and result…

“I don’t know about the finals mix.”

“I think more importantly it’s our second consecutive win, which we haven’t managed to do this year.”

“We weren’t troubled at all in the first half.”

“I thought our wingers did a very good job in the first half, but we just lacked that last decisive action to get a clear opportunity on goal.”

“The players that came on made a fantastic impact (in the second half).”

“We came from behind which is, in our situation, not easy to do.”

“I’m just so proud of the group. Great character, resilience…a wonderful performance away from home.”

On Paul Izzo’s performance…

“When you’re away from home, you come to a venue like this, and a good opponent, you need everyone to stand up.”

“Paul I don’t think needed to do anything in the first half.”

“But we certainly required him early in the second. He made some great saves.”

On the finals race…

“We’ve got too much to worry about. In three days we’ve got to play Melbourne City. Then we’ve got Perth.”

“We need to recover well, get home, play Melbourne City, try and win another game of football.”

On Wednesday’s game against City…

“Well we’re down 1-0 after 20 minutes.”

“That will be something unique I think for all of us, me included.”

“Our focus is just on Melbourne City. We’ll do everything we can to get another win and go from there.”
