A tense Melbourne Derby played in hot conditions ended with a point for each team, as Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City’s second meeting of the season ended in a 0-0 draw.

The draw means our girls in blue are unbeaten in their last nine matches, the longest streak in the Club’s A-League Women’s history.

Looking ahead to a vital clash against Newcastle on Saturday, a draw will secure Victory’s place in the finals, whereas a win will keep our chances of finishing top alive.

The Jets sit seventh on the Liberty A-League table, only six points behind Victory with two matches to play.

Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday, Head Coach Jeff Hopkins said these last two fixtures are not going to be easy.

“Looking at the two games that we’ve got left, they’re two tough games,” Jeff said.

“We’re looking to go up there (to Newcastle) this week being very, very positive and looking past the one point we need to make finals.

“We want to go up there as determined as we can be to take all three points. We want to finish as high up the league as we possibly can to have a top-two finish.

“Look to get a week off to give us the best possible opportunity to progress as far as we can and hopefully go on and win it all.”

A point will secure finals for our girls in blue, but with Newcastle needing to win their final two matches of the season, Hopkins said he anticipates Saturday “to be played like a final”.

“I think this game is going to be played like a final, especially the latter stages depending on the score line,” he explained.

“Obviously we’ve watched them quite closely. Their second half of the season has been excellent. They’ve definitely become more consistent.

“They’ve got a more consistent team. They’ve been able to get the players they wanted on the park and they’re a very effective team with some very good individual players.

“It’s going to be a high-intensity, high-pressure game. And yeah, look, we’ve prepared for that.”
