Melbourne Victory has reached an agreement with Costa Rican side Club Sport Herediano to loan attacking midfielder Marvin Angulo as an injury replacement player for Billy Celeski.
The 22-year-old Costa Rican will join Melbourne Victory on October 1, subject to a medical and visa, after Celeski was ruled out for the rest of 2009/10 earlier this month with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
Angulo, who has made two international appearances for Costa Rica, was originally spotted by Melbourne Victory Coach Ernie Merrick during a scouting trip to Costa Rica last year.
“Marvin is a very quick attacking midfielder who can also play as a second striker and has an impressive free kick,” Melbourne Victory Football Operations Manager Gary Cole said.
“He’s been on our radar since Ernie travelled to Costa Rica to watch Jose Luis Lopez play and spotted Marvin in the process.
“We’ve followed his progress with interest ever since and it’s fantastic to reach an agreement with him and his club Herediano as cover for Billy Celeski.
“We’re hoping to get him to Australia as soon as possible so he can complete his medical, and we can organise a visa for him to stay and play in Australia.”
Angulo will become Melbourne Victory’s fifth foreigner alongside countryman Carlos Hernandez, Scotsman Grant Brebner, Brazilian Ney Fabiano and Thai Surat Sukha.
