Post-Match: Tony Popovic Reflects on Original Rivalry Draw

A-League Men’s coach Tony Popovic spoke to the media post-match after his side’s draw with Adelaide United.

On the performance…

“Definitely it was an outstanding display.”

“The boys were fantastic. The only thing missing was the extra two points.”

“The boys should be really proud of their performance.”

On the Roderick Miranda red card…

“The second one is a foul or yellow card.”

“The first one it is debatable whether it’s even a foul.”

“Disappointed [that he was given the second yellow].”

On the performances of the debutants…

“Fabian Monge made his debut in the A-League tonight, in a big game, big crowd, against an opponent that has been doing really well in the first couple of matches.”

“I though he was brilliant. It was such a shame he didn’t get that goal when he went through one-on-one with the keeper.”

“Franco Lino made his debut tonight (as well).”

“Overall there are a lot of positives.”

On the improvement in performances this season…

“A lot of work was put into pre-season.”

“We were very particular in the type of players we wanted to bring in.”

“We worked extremely hard on improving our football, improving with the ball.”

“Today was probably the most we’ve shown [across] the three matches.”

“We won’t lose any confidence from what happened today. We’ve got to build on it.”

On Nishan Velupillay’s display…

“He should have scored five tonight.”

“We can obviously talk about the evolving player and how he’s improving and creating opportunities. He scored a wonderful goal last week.”

“The next step for him is that he should be celebrating a lot more goals.”

On Adama Traore’s injury…

“We’ll get scans and see.”

“We’re hoping it’s not too bad.”
