Valadon and Victory up for the Big Blue fight

Jordi Valadon is rolling up his sleeves to compete for a place in Melbourne Victory’s XI.

The 22-year-old, last season’s Victory Medal recipient, has started every Isuzu UTE A-League match he has been available for this term.

However, selection to perform for his country at the U23 Asian Cup earlier this month meant the young Australian has missed the last three league fixtures, with him having to follow the activity of Arthur Diles’ team from Saudi Arabia alongside Club teammate Joshua Rawlins as the Young Socceroos reached the tournament’s last eight.

His return to Melbourne a few days ago coincides with Victory’s preparations for the Big Blue on Monday, January 26, kick-off 5:40pm AEDT, but the midfielder knows a starting berth is no guarantee.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Valadon spoke about what it takes to put your name on the teamsheet and getting ready for a clash with Sydney FC.

“Obviously, competition for places is something that drives really good teams and helps them to go very far. You know you have to be on top of your game if you want to play, in training and when you’re on the field on the weekend. I am looking forward to really trying my best to get back into the midfield and help the team wherever I can.

“It’s a derby, it’s pretty fierce, and there’s always a bit of a rivalry there. So you really look forward to it. There’s a bit of a bounce in your step, and you’re up for it.”

Jordi Valadon returns to training with Melbourne Victory.

Despite his focus being firmly back on matters concerning the Navy Blue, Victory’s Valadon believes there are valuable takeaways from his latest green and gold endeavours, including what an honour it is to play for Australia.

“I think it was still a very positive experience. Obviously, it didn’t end the way we would have wanted. I would have liked to have lifted the trophy, but I think it was still really good, and we played some really good football.

“To play for Australia at whatever level is always a pleasure and a goal.”
