Victory turns attention to Jets in Geelong

Melbourne Victory will need to move on quickly from its 4-1 win over Central Coast Mariners, with a clash with Newcastle Jets in Geelong coming just five days later.

Victory hosts the Jets at Simonds Stadium on January 2 on the back of three straight wins, moving it up to second on the Hyundai A-League ladder.

The club’s coaching staff will assess the playing group in the wake of Wednesday night’s energy-sapping game against the Mariners, before deciding on a squad to face Newcastle.

Victory’s busy January schedule will give every player on the roster a chance to contribute, according to head coach Kevin Muscat.

“We’ll pick the best team available. The best set of players that we think will give us the best chance of winning against Newcastle,” he said.

“There are a lot of factors that will come into play.

“I’ve said it previously – everyone will have an opportunity to contribute in the rest of this campaign.

“It’s a clear message that when you do get that opportunity, you’ll have the best opportunity to succeed if you’re prepared the best.

“We’ll give all the players – the ones who didn’t play tonight – the best opportunity to be ready when they’re called upon.

“It’s not if, it’s when. It’s a simple as that with the number of games we’ve got coming up.”
