Victory’s best moments from the regular season

Victory’s best moments from the regular season

Melbourne Victory missed out on the Premier’s Plate, but it turns its attentions to a third straight appearance in the Westfield W-League Finals Series.

Victory suffered a 2-1 loss to Sydney FC on Wednesday to finish third on the table.

The game saw it finish its regular season as it prepares to face Brisbane Roar in the Finals Series.

Victory equalled its record for most wins in a Westfield W-League regular season with seven, while its points haul (23) was one short of its best, set in 2018/19 with 24.

We take a look back at the best moments from the regular season.

Demolition Derby

Victory kick-started its season with a 6-0 thrashing of City at CB Smith Reserve in January.

Annalie Longo and Melina Ayres put Victory ahead before it ran away to claim the biggest win in the history of the Melbourne Derby.

Lisa De Vanna scored a wonderful individual effort before Amy Jackson, Catherine Zimmerman and Kyra Cooney-Cross netted.

Response in Adelaide

After that success, Victory fell to back-to-back defeats ahead of a trip to Adelaide in late January.

But it produced a gutsy performance against the Reds and Zimmerman’s 78th-minute winner started an unbeaten run.

Late change doesn’t impact Victory

In a topsy-turvy season, Victory’s clash at home to the Western Sydney Wanderers in March was moved from Lakeside Stadium to AAMI Park, where it was played behind closed doors.

Longo volleyed in what proved to be a 43rd-minute winner as Victory again stepped up despite the change.

Glory hit for six

Needing a win to secure a finals place and stay alive in the race for the Premier’s Plate, Victory produced one of its best performances of the season against Perth.

Ayres and Cooney-Cross scored braces either side of goals from Claudia Bunge and Zimmerman in a 6-0 thrashing.
