Men’s Match Report | Central Coast 2-2 Melbourne Victory

A dramatic 2-2 draw against the Central Coast Mariners sees our boys in blue remain undefeated.

The Mariners took an early lead in the 16th minute when Alou Kuol capitalised on a defensive lapse from Roderick Miranda, slotting the ball into the back of the net with a clinical left-footed finish.

While controlling most of the possession after that, Tony Popovic’s side struggled to find the back of the net right until the edge of halftime. Bruno Fornaroli showcased his goal-scoring prowess with a stunning right-footed shot from outside the box, leaving the Mariners’ goalkeeper with no chance.

It’s seven goals in six matches now for the Socceroo who continues his stellar form to begin the season.

The second half continued to provide end-to-end action, with both teams pushing for a decisive advantage. In the 52nd minute, Nishan Velupillay put Melbourne Victory ahead with a remarkable right-footed shot from outside the box, giving his team a 2-1 lead.

However, the Mariners fought back, earning a penalty in the 73rd minute after a contentious handball by Fabian Monge. Ángel Torres stepped up and converted the spot-kick with a composed left-footed shot, levelling the score at 2-2.

As the clock ticked down, Popovic’s side looked for one final blow. Victory had an opportunity to snatch the victory in the dying moments, but Connor Chapman’s header from a set-piece narrowly missed the target.

In the 90+7 minute, the referee blew the final whistle, bringing an end to another trip on the road.
