Men’s Match Preview | Victory vs Adelaide United

Melbourne Victory Men take on Adelaide United in a crucial Original Rivalry clash on Saturday, January 18.

Victory has enjoyed strong head-to-head success against United in recent times, winning in their past three meetings – notably including the 1-0 win in the Australia Cup semi-final at AAMI Park earlier this season.

Melbourne Victory:

After a strong start to the season, a five-game winless streak momentarily sees Victory sat just outside of the top six.

Despite positive showings in these games, Victory has been unable to claim all three points against their opposition.

Victory were moments away from doing so against Western United in their previous game, but two goals conceded in added time saw Victory go from winners to losers within a few minutes.

Arthur Diles’ side will aim to turn it around this weekend in the City of Churches, looking to take away the positives and build on their shortcomings.

With Brendan Hamill and Santos scoring their first goals of the season against Western, Victory now interestingly have over 12 different goalscorers this season – tied most in the league.

Adelaide United:

Recording just a single loss this season, Adelaide United enjoyed a strong start to the 2024/25 Isuzu Ute A-League Men’s campaign so far.

The Reds are currently sat 2nd on the ladder, tied on points with first-placed Melbourne City.

After taking their first loss at home against the Western Sydney Wanderers, Carl Veart’s side recorded two impressive 2-1 wins on the road against Macarthur FC and Wellington Phoenix respectively.

Luka Jovanovic has scored the winning goal for the Reds off the bench in both games, while Zach Clough has been amongst the best players in the league this season – recording nine goal contributions in just 11 games.
