Victory stars shine in Matildas win

Melbourne Victory’s Emily Gielnik and Alex Chidiac played key roles in the Matildas’ 3-0 triumph over Slovenia at HBF Park.

Reinstated back in the squad and straight into the Starting XI for Joe Montemurro’s first game in charge of the CommBank Matildas, Emily Gielnik and Alex Chidiac quickly displayed their immense quality on the national stage.

Pouncing on a loose ball in the box in the third minute, Emily Gielnik recorded her 13th career goal for the Matildas to kick off the scoring.

Finding the back of the net in her last outing in Green and Gold against Chinese Taipei back in December 2024, Gielnik continued her goalscoring form that saw her take out Melbourne Victory’s Golden Boot.

While Gielnik looked a constant threat down the right wing, attacking midfielder Alex Chidiac pulled the strings in the centre of the park.

The reigning Julie Dolan Medalist did not miss a beat in Perth after an outstanding campaign for the Navy Blues, putting in an impressive display on her 36th Matildas appearance.

Chidiac played over an hour and Gielnik was withdrawn in the 75th minute, placing themselves in great stead to feature in the upcoming fixtures after exceptional returns to action.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old midfielder Alana Murphy was named on the bench and will aim to add to her existing two caps for the senior national team in the remaining three games for the Matildas.
