VPL Coaches Notes: Victory hit Bulleen Lions for four

The goals remained flowing for Melbourne Victory with another four-goal win, this time away to Bulleen Lions in Round 17 of VPL1.

Returning to winning ways with an impressive 4-0 triumph over Brunswick Juventus last Monday, Victory were up for a big task against fourth-placed Bulleen Lions at the Veneto Club on Saturday night.

The Boys in Blue would get off to a perfect start as midfielder Jack Mihailidis opened the scoring in the 18th minute, getting his name on the scorers’ sheet for a second game running.

On the brink of the half-time break, striker Mikey Ghossaini would double Victory’s lead from the penalty spot.

Already in a fantastic position two goals ahead, things would get even better for the Young Vucks after the hosts were reduced to 10 men just prior to the hour mark of the game, with Ghossaini taking full advantage and securing his brace. Netting his 15th goal of the season, the 18-year-old extended his lead in the race for the VPL1 Golden Boot.

Bulleen would find a way through to notch a goal back just minutes later, but winger Alex Lee would be sure to kill off any momentum for the hosts in the 72nd minute with his ninth score of the season.

Although Bulleen would later net a consolation goal in the dying stages of the game, Victory would happily prevail as 4-2 winners and jump ahead of Bulleen on the ladder, pushing into the league’s top four.

Speaking to MelbourneVictory.com.au, Senior Academy Head Coach, Besart Berisha, was pleased with how his team showed out in a tough fixture.

“It was a very strong performance from our boys and an extremely important win at this stage of the season. Coming away from home against a great Bulleen Lions side and scoring four goals showed the quality, belief and mentality that this group has developed.

“What makes this victory even more pleasing is that we were missing four important players. The boys who stepped in were outstanding. They fully embraced our football, trusted the process, and delivered a fantastic performance.

“The 4-2 result is a reward for the hard work the players are putting in every week. We are playing some outstanding football at the moment, but more importantly, we are building a team with a strong mentality, a clear identity and a genuine belief in what we can achieve together.”
