Melbourne Victory keeper Glen Moss is looking forward to taking on some of his former team-mates when the defending champion hosts Wellington Phoenix at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Moss spent two seasons at the Phoenix and is good friends with coach Ricki Herbert, who also doubles as the coach of the New Zealand national team. The 26-year-old can’t wait to see what his former team serves up to him on the weekend.
“I don’t think I have anything to prove. This is one I’ve been looking forward to, to be honest. I’ve got a lot of happy memories from Wellington, and I’m obviously pretty close with Ricki and the rest of the Kiwi boys, so it’s one I’m looking forward to,” he said.
Moss’ international career is on hold at the moment as he serves out a suspension which will keep him out of the All Whites’ World Cup qualification matches against Bahrain in October and November.
His focus is firmly on his performances for his club at the moment and after five games in goal, he is starting to feel at home.
“I’ve been getting more confident every game I play. It’s (about) coming to a new club, and settling in as quick as I can. I’m feeling better as every game goes by,” he said.
One of the biggest challenges for Moss over the first few games with Melbourne has been getting used to the constantly-changing personnel in the back four, but he said the team’s strong structure has helped him adjust to that.
“There’s been a few re-shuffles with the loss of Kevin (Muscat), and now Billy (Celeski) as well. But the good thing about the club that I’ve noticed is that we do have the depth to cover, I thought Grant Brebner was quality when he came on for Billy. I’m looking forward to the return of Kevin,” he said.
“Everyone has their role, it doesn’t matter who plays you have to stick to the same game plan. The quality of the depth is brilliant, it’s just a matter of getting the points now.”
Moss is in a good position to judge how Victory is playing at the moment, and thinks that the five points from five games so far is not an accurate reflection of the quality of football that is being played.
“It’s pretty disappointing, not to have all the points on the board so far. Then again, we’ve been playing some pretty good football so far and it’s just a matter of putting that onto the scoreboard and getting the points together,” he said.
“I’ve got the best seat in the house really to look at that and the boys have been playing good football. I think unfortunately lady luck isn’t looking over us at the moment.”
