W-League report: Jets 0-2 Victory

Melbourne Victory

Melbourne Victory recorded its third straight win and moved into third on the Westfield W-League table after a 2-0 win over the Newcastle Jets.

Summary

First-half goals from Kayla Morrison and Catherine Zimmerman saw Victory to an impressive win at No.2 Sportsground on Saturday, with the Jets’ Rhianna Pollicina sent off late.

It continued Victory’s winning run in a game which saw Amy Jackson equal Gulcan Koca’s club record for most Westfield W-League appearances with her 66th.

Victory made a dream start as Morrison scored her first Westfield W-League goal in the eighth minute.

The defender got on the end of a Kyra Cooney-Cross set-piece to head in the opener.

Melina Ayres almost doubled Victory’s lead just two minutes later, but the forward was denied by a great save from Claire Coelho.

Victory continued to dominate and Cooney-Cross rattled the crossbar with a 20-yard effort in the 24th minute.

But the visitor would go 2-0 up on the half-hour mark through Zimmerman’s fourth goal of the season.

A fine team passing move led to Lisa De Vanna finding Ayres, who played in Zimmerman to produce a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Jets striker Tara Andrews had a pair of chances before half-time, including forcing Victory goalkeeper Gaby Garton into a good save.

Victory continued to push to begin the second half, MelindaJ Barbieri hitting the crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick before Ayres headed an Angela Beard cross wide.

The visitor controlled proceedings late before Pollicina picked up a second yellow card in additional time to be sent off for the Jets.
