Head Coach, Grant Brebner, has expressed his frustrations following Victory’s 3-1 defeat at home to Adelaide United.
Jake Brimmer gave Melbourne the lead in the first half, rattling the crossbar with a free kick which crept over the line.
However, Adelaide levelled the score before half-time and sealed the three points with two goals in the second half.
Brebner on the result…
“The result is not the result we wanted. We should’ve had a few more goals than we did in the first half. We started nervy and grew into the game, with some really good passages of play and maybe should’ve had one or two after that.”
On the club’s depth…
“We are really stretching our depth at the moment. The players that we bring on are fairly down the pecking order and some weren’t even in the squad at the start of the season and we’re pulling them in from the youth team. We’re asking them to do a job but when you’re bringing Rudy Gestede off through an injury, it upsets the apple cart and of course they scored soon after.”
On leadership…
“Robbie Kruse looked good tonight. Adama Traore coming back in did well and Jacob Butterfield probably had his best game for a while. Structurally, we were okay tonight. Individually, every single goal, we had enough bodies in the box to deal with it and it’s criminal to defend that way.”
On lack of form…
“We’re not running away from this situation. Everybody is working extremely hard to get us out of the situation. I sat here last week humiliated, this week I sit here really angry at the way we gifted goals to the opposition. When you defend like that, you’re in trouble.”
On Adelaide’s goals…
“It’s down to individual mistakes and poor decisions. Not intensity because we had the numbers back in the box.”
On Gestede…
“He has a stiff knee, which happened just before half-time. We had a look at it, he went on but gradually got worse.”
On Anderson…
“He is struggling with an ankle strain and will join the casualty list.”
On turning this around…
“We will continue to work hard. We will come in tomorrow morning and hit the training track. We will make sure that we are doing everything in our power to turn our fortunes around. It’s a frustrating time for our members and fans and for everybody.”
On Sydney next week…
“Rivalries or not, we need to win football games. Next week we travel on the road, we come up against Sydney in the ‘Big Blue’, which historically is always a tough game but every game is tough at the moment.”
