A-League report: Victory 0-1 Adelaide

A-League report: Victory 0-1 Adelaide

Melbourne Victory was edged 1-0 by Adelaide United in their A-League meeting at AAMI Park on Sunday.

Summary

Craig Goodwin’s first-half goal proved to be enough for Adelaide in a game which marked Member Recognition Round for Victory.

Victory pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half, but was unable to find a goal.

Adelaide put Victory under early pressure and almost opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but Jordan Elsey’s header from Goodwin’s corner hit the crossbar.

Victory goalkeeper Matt Acton was called into action twice in the 18th minute, denying Pacifique Niyongabire with his feet before diving onto a loose ball following a scramble in the area.

Niyongabire put a good chance over the crossbar for Adelaide after a Ben Halloran cutback on the half-hour mark.

Adelaide opened the scoring six minutes before half-time, Goodwin finishing after a pass from Joshua Cavallo.

Rudy Gestede threatened for Victory in first-half additional time, heading a difficult chance wide from Adama Traore’s cross from the left.

Victory pushed for an equaliser to begin the second half and Gestede headed a Callum McManaman cross over at the back post in the 50th minute, and he did likewise from the Englishman’s delivery following the hour-mark.

Acton was largely untroubled by a Halloran strike in the 66th minute as the shot-stopper dived low to his right to hold onto a comfortable save.

Boosted by the introductions of Lleyton Brooks and Nishan Velupillay, Victory pushed hard late and Dylan Ryan fired wide from an Elvis Kamsoba cross in the 88th minute as Adelaide held on.
