After Archie Thompson’s unforgettable five goals in the 2006/2007 A-League Grand Final, he admitted to shedding a tear inside a sold-out Etihad Stadium.
“It’s a bit soppy, but I looked around,” Thompson explained on SEN’s This Is Your Sporting Life podcast.
“And to see where this game has come in the space of a year, to be a part of it and to have friends and family there, it was a really special moment and one I’ll never forget.
“I must admit, I did shed a tear.”
Thompson’s special evening came after what was thought to be an unrealistic prediction pre-match; little did anyone know the striker had actually underestimated the end result.
“I said in the pre-match press conference that I was going to score a hat-trick in the Grand Final,” Thompson said.
“My teammates saw what I said and thought, ‘Archie’s on one of his rants again.’
“I was just so confident in my ability and also the ability of the team. I knew it was going to be a special night – I didn’t think it was going to be that special – but it was just awesome.”
It was a seminal moment for Victory in front of more than 54,000 fans.
“I went off the ground and I could see everyone chanting my name.”
“There’s moments in sport and your career that you remember. That moment, walking off will be something I’ll never forget.”
