Best of 2015/16: FFA Cup Final v Perth Glory

Melbourne Victory created history in November last year by winning its first ever Westfield FFA Cup, defeating Perth Glory 2-0 in the Final at AAMI Park.

Victory was cruelly eliminated by Glory in the Quarter Finals of the inaugural competition in 2014, with Adelaide United going on to win the Cup.

On its way to the 2015 Final, Victory thrashed Balmain Tigers 6-0, survived a tense battle with Rockdale Suns, defeated Adelaide United 3-1 and accounted for Hume City 3-0.

In the Final, Victory did all the damage in a seven-minute burst late in the first half.

On 35 minutes, new marquee signing Oliver Bozanic pounced on a loose ball in the 18-yeard box and calmly slotted it past Ante Covic.

Soon after, Besart Berisha was played through by a brilliant pass from Carl Valeri, and the Albanian striker made no mistake with his shot.

Perth had its chances to get back into the match in the second half, and Valeri was later dismissed for receiving two yellow cards, but it did little to take the shine off a memorable night for Victory.

Besart Berisha.

What Kevin Muscat said: “I firmly believe you get what you deserve. Yes, it’s a special night and let me tell you, right now it feels bloody great!

“I’m ecstatic for the group. Everyone was waiting for a (Grand Final) hangover but we showed how hungry we were. In fact, we were probably the only team that went on record saying we wanted to win it.

“And that’s how much emphasis we put on it. It’s a trophy, it shouldn’t be taken for granted, and it’s going to look bloody great in our cabinet with our other trophies.”
