Jason Davidson and Chris Ikonomidis discussed their stunning goals in Melbourne Victory’s FFA Cup Final win over the Central Coast Mariners.
Davidson produced a sensational 20-yard free-kick and Ikonomidis scored with a brilliant late strike in Saturday’s 2-1 win at AAMI Park.
The goals secured Victory’s second FFA Cup crown and first since 2015, while booking a spot in the AFC Champions League play-offs.
Davidson said he took the free-kick ahead of Mark Viduka Medallist Jake Brimmer after studying Mariners goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.
“In the first half, ‘Jakey’ obviously took it but I was watching ‘Biraz’ and he was kind of in the middle of the goal,” Davidson told Network 10.
“In the second half when it came up to the opportunity I said to him let me take it because he’s over-covering one side, if I hit it well and hit the target I thought I had a chance of scoring.”
Davidson’s goal had Victory on track for the trophy before Ikonomidis came off the bench to score, a goal which proved much-needed after Oliver Bozanic’s late effort for the Mariners.
Ikonomidis’ first Victory goal came after a pass from Francesco Margiotta and the forward discussed his strike.
“I saw the ball float perfectly for me and I just thought I’d take my time and set my body properly on my left foot and just hit it as sweetly as I could,” he told Network 10.
