Eye on ICC: Atletico Madrid opens tour with win

Atletico Madrid opened its tour of Australia with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the International Champions Cup Australia on Friday night.

Diego Godin’s 40th-minute goal proved the difference at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with Jan Oblak producing some outstanding saves at the other end.

Godin broke the deadlock when Gabi’s free-kick skimmed off the head of Tottenham midfielder Anton Walkes, allowing the Uruguayan to poke the ball home from close range.

Tottenham had several chances of its own but was unable to convert as Oblak earned Man of the Match honours for his performance in goal.

“It’s a pre-season game, but it is always important to win and keep a clean sheet,” Oblak said.

“Now, we need to keep working this pre-season because we still have a lot of preparation ahead to be at our best level for the start of the league.”

Atletico will continue its pre-season with a tour match against Melbourne Victory at Geelong’s Simonds Stadium on Sunday. Tickets are available here.
