Genreau keen to keep building ahead of Wanderers clash

Denis Genreau understands the significance of Melbourne Victory’s fixture against Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Boys in Blue are coming into the Isuzu UTE A-League clash fizzing, thanks to the four-game winning streak they have assembled since mid-December.

Victory, recording their best run since 2018, have beaten Adelaide United, Melbourne City, Wellington Phoenix, and Perth Glory consecutively at AAMI Park to fly up the ladder.

Next up in Victoria are the 12th-place Wanderers on Saturday, January 10, kick-off 5pm AEDT, for the 35th ALM meeting between the two clubs.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Genreau spoke on his pathway back into the starting XI following suspension.

“I think that it’s really important that there’s depth in every position, there’s no complacency in training because you know there’s someone right behind you, ready to take your spot. I think that’s really important for the squad to be successful in the long term.”

He added: “Hopefully we can keep building on that, keep seeing more and more fans in the stadium and keep putting on a show for them.”

Denis Genreau plays a pass during Victory’s 3-2 win versus Perth Glory at AAMI Park.

This weekend’s opposition, led by Alen Stajcic, have lost their last three matches, and are winless in five A-League outings. Their last win, albeit a significant one over Sydney FC, came at the end of November.

But despite their spot as basement dwellers, Genreau is certainly not taking the visiting Wanderers lightly.

“We don’t look at all where they are on the ladder, we look at the players they have, the way they’re going to play, and the way they have been playing. And they’re a very, very good team, probably one of the best teams in the competition.

“We know that it’s definitely the most important game of the season so far, it’s going to be the toughest. They’re going to come out flying, and we have to be ready to match that intensity and more.”
