Preview

Melbourne Victory will be looking to secure a second consecutive win when they make the trip to Adelaide United this Friday night.

The latest rendition of the Original Rivalry sees Victory searching for their third win of the campaign having regained some of their best form last week.

Victory were dominant in their 4-0 win over the Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park last time out.

Jake Brimmer, Chris Ikonomidis, Nick D’Agostino and recent signing Bruno Fornaroli all found the back of the net in what was a much needed win for Tony Popovic’s side.

Friday night’s clash will see both Victory and Adelaide take to the pitch for the final time prior to the three-week World Cup break.

The prospect of a three week gap between competitive fixtures should allow both sets of players to leave nothing in reserve when they meet on Friday.

Victory have an impressive recent record at Coopers Stadium, having won both of the Original Rivalry games in Adelaide last season, plus a win in the quarterfinals of the Australia Cup in January.

In fact, the Reds have failed to beat Victory since May 2021.

Adelaide though are coming into the game in good form, having won their previous two matches and only losing once this season.

All signs point towards a fierce contest between two historic rivals in what is sure to be a thrilling Friday night contest.

Player in focus

Paul Izzo comes up against his former side having made a solid start to his Victory career this season.

The Adelaide-born goalkeeper will need to be at his best upon his return to South Australia, especially considering the threat posed from set-pieces delivered by World Cup-bound Craig Goodwin towards 195cm striker Hiroshi Ibusuki.
