Melbourne Victory signs Jacob Butterfield

Melbourne Victory signs Jacob Butterfield

Melbourne Victory is pleased to announce it has signed English central midfielder Jacob Butterfield ahead of the 2020/21 A-League season.

Butterfield arrives at Victory with close to 350 games of experience playing in England’s Championship for Barnsley, Middlesbrough, Crystal Palace, Derby County and most recently Luton Town.

The 30-year-old becomes Victory’s second overseas signing of the pre-season, joining attacking player Callum McManaman.

Butterfield said he was excited to join Melbourne Victory ahead of season 2020/21.

“I’m really pleased to have signed with Melbourne Victory, it is a club with a proud history and such a big following,” Butterfield said.

“Grant Brebner outlined his vision for the team and the role he wants me to play, and I’m really excited to have the opportunity to play for the Victory members and fans.

“I’m looking forward to moving to Melbourne. I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and all the staff, and with the start of the season not far away, getting stuck into pre-season training.”

Victory Head Coach Grant Brebner welcomed the creative and hard-working midfielder to the club.

“We are extremely pleased to have Jacob join us at Melbourne Victory,” Brebner said.

“Jacob is another strong addition to our playing group. He is a good age and brings a wealth of experience having played in the Championship for a number of big clubs.

“He is known for working extremely hard box-to-box, he has a presence on the ball and is also a proven goal scorer.

“We are looking to build on the foundations we established at the end of last season. We have made some good progress during the pre-season and we believe Jacob and Callum will compliment what we are building at the club.”

Butterfield is expected to arrive in Melbourne in the coming weeks.
