Morrison raring to lead Victory into battle in Shepparton

Melbourne Victory Women’s Captain Kayla Morrison is optimistic that the tide can turn for her team ahead of their clash with Newcastle Jets.

Standing up to the plate with the Girls in Blue on a six-game winless streak, Morrison is confident that Victory can pick up form in the tight race for Ninja A-League finals football, who take on Newcastle Jets on Saturday, February 7, kick-off 7:30pm AEDT at John McEwen Reserve.

Assisting Kennedy White’s opening goal against Canberra on the weekend, the American defender did all she could to lead the side while a player down in the Capital, but the hosts ultimately triumphed on the day.

While dropping out of the top six momentarily, Victory has the opportunity to push back up the ladder with a positive result against the Jets on Saturday.

Amid a tough patch of form, Morrison expressed the importance of self-reflection in the pursuit of improved performance and results.

“I think we’re at the point where we need to focus on ourselves, less so on the opposition. What are things that we’ve been doing well? What are things we need to have clicked a little bit better?

“There’s things that we’ve been confident at throughout the season, we’re playing out from the back… we’re just going to put a lot of focus on us with the ball and scoring goals.”

Tasked with the responsibility to pick up the group during the moments of difficulty, the 29-year-old stated her full confidence in her teammates to get back to winning ways.

“It’s hard not to be optimistic when you look around and you see the girls that you’re with

“I truly believe if we can get one win, then we’ll be fine, and everything feels better when you’re winning. So I still am optimistic, and it does feel like the girls still believe.”
