Melbourne Victory Football Club confirmed on Wednesday that midfielder Nick Ward has agreed to terms with Wellington Phoenix and will depart for his new club immediately.

Melbourne Victory Football Club confirmed on Wednesday that midfielder Nick Ward has agreed to terms with Wellington Phoenix and will depart for his new club immediately.

Ward, who was signed from English Club Queens Park Rangers in 2007, spent just over two and a half years at Melbourne Victory, before deciding on a move across the Tasman.

While disappointed to be moving on, the opportunity to join Wellington was one that the 25 year-old couldn-t turn down, “I-m sad to be leaving Melbourne but the prospect of first-team football at the Phoenix was obviously very appealing”.

“I want to be playing week in, week out and I feel I have a better chance of regular football with Wellington”.

“I-ve enjoyed my time in Melbourne and met some great people along the way. We-re parting on good terms and I wish the guys the best of luck for the rest of the season”.

Ward made 59 appearances for Melbourne Victory, representing the club in the Hyundai A-League – including the clubs treble-winning season in 2008/09 – as well as the AFC Champions League.

Melbourne Victory Football Operations Manager, Gary Cole wished Ward well at his new home “Nick has been a valuable contributor to the club over the past few seasons and it-s always sad when a premiership player leaves“.

“Unfortunately he-s found it tough to cement a regular spot in the side of late and feels that he needs to be playing regular football and we wish him all the best at Wellington” Cole added.
