NPLW Coaches Notes: Victory win milestone match

Melbourne Victory made a winning start to the 2026 NPLW season, beating Bulleen Lions on a historic day for the Club’s Women’s program.

Debuting in the top-tier state competition after years of lobbying and extensive pre-season preparations, the Senior team overcame the challenge of a much-fancied, experienced Bulleen outfit 0-1 at Veneto Club on Saturday afternoon.

The Round 1 match’s only goal arrived after 14 minutes of action in the Eastern Suburbs. Sienna Techera was unfortunate to see her far-post shot saved by former Western United and Perth Glory goalkeeper Alyssa Dall’Oste, but teammate Leyla Hussein was on hand to head in the rebound from close range.

Victory had chances to extend their lead in the first half before a second 45, where, despite the weekend heat reducing the contest’s tempo, a structured defensive effort was required against last term’s runners-up to preserve Chloe McKenzie’s clean sheet and the three points.

This rear-guard action was led by Captain, Aeryn Tarrant, who heads up a player leadership group completed by Catherine Moule, Lucy Simic, Porscha Tam and Emmy Traynor.

Speaking to MelbourneVictory.com.au, NPLW Head Coach, Santi Escudero, dissected the team’s performance and talked to the positive signs at either end of the pitch.

“In the first half, the team showed clear dominance: we found spaces well, created several chances, and scored a goal, ending the first half without difficulties.

“The second half was heavily influenced by the weather, for both teams, slowing down the tempo. Bulleen, being a winning team, pressed us intensely, and we had some minutes where we had to make a strong defensive effort, which we executed well, overcoming the toughest moments of pressure from the opponent. We even had chances to score another goal.

“Overall, we are very satisfied. We saw the results of our preparation, the planning, and the strategy. Both in moments of fluid ball possession and when defending, the team delivered a solid, positive performance. We will continue building on this foundation as we face the challenges ahead in the season.”
