Post-match reaction: Popovic

Melbourne Victory Head Coach Tony Popovic spoke following the team’s heartbreaking Semi-Final defeat to Western United on Saturday night.

Popovic on the result…

“It’s a feeling of disappointment of course, disappointment that we’re not going through.”

“We had a lot of different moments there that could’ve changed the outcome but it wasn’t to be. They took their moments well.”

on the positives from the Semi-Final…

“Our youngsters will grow. We’ve got Nick D’Agostino, Jake Brimmer and Ben Folami as three of our front four players. They’re still improving and evolving as players and have had a fantastic year.”

“This will only improve them, to play in big games like this. They’ve had wonderful years and will learn from this experience.”

“We’re talking about young players who aren’t accustomed to playing week in, week out at a big club in big pressure, so they can only grow from that.”

on the season as a whole…

“We won a trophy for the Club. Winning a trophy is important at this football club so we achieved that.”

“We got so close to the premiership, so close to a Grand Final and that’s where this club wants to be every year, challenging and winning things.”

“We put some smiles back on the fans at Melbourne Victory and hopefully we can do a lot more of that next year.”
