Victory aiming to take down Jets in W-League

Victory aiming to take down Jets in W-League

Melbourne Victory’s Westfield W-League side will look to build on a strong second-half performance against Sydney FC when it faces Newcastle Jets on Sunday.

After a sluggish first half, a stunning strike from MelindaJ Barbierri brought Victory back to life in an intense encounter against the Sky Blues at AAMI Park.

Victory created a flurry of chances but was denied an equaliser by some last-ditch defending by Sydney FC, which won the game 2-1.

With a strong performance fresh in its mind, Melbourne now heads to the Hunter where it faces Newcastle on Sunday.

The Jets ran out 1-0 winners the last time the teams met in a tight contest at ABD Stadium.

Newcastle has enjoyed a mixed run of results since then, but a win on Sunday could help it sure up a Semi Final spot.

Jets captain Tara Andrews looms as an ever-present threat, and Victory will need to restrict her chances on goal if it is to take all three points from Hunter Stadium.

For Victory, a win against the Jets will help rebuild a season in which it is yet to have found its true form.

Spirited recent showings against both Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers will give the side plenty of belief that it can notch up another win with only two games remaining this season.

The match will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 505 and ABC TV from 2.00pm AEDT.
