Victory looking to finish NYL season on a high

Melbourne Victory’s Foxtel National Youth League side will look to end its season on a positive note when it hosts Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park on Friday.

The match will be played as a curtain-raiser to Victory’s blockbuster Hyundai A-League clash, also against Brisbane.

Victory has had nearly two weeks to prepare for its final game of the Foxtel National Youth League season, with a 2-1 loss to Adelaide United on January 2 followed by a bye.

The Round 8 loss to the Reds ended Victory’s hopes of winning the Conference A title, which was secured by Adelaide last week.

Victory, fourth on the Foxtel National Youth League ladder, is three points behind second-placed Roar.

While a win could see Victory move above Brisbane, it’s unlikely given the latter’s superior goal difference.

A new-look Brisbane side defeated Melbourne City 5-2 in its last outing, with seven players making their Foxtel National Youth League debuts.

Despite having Joseph Champness sent off in the first half, Roar held on for the win after scoring three goals in the dying stages of the contest.

Victory and Brisbane have met once already this season, with Roar posting a 3-1 win at Cleveland Showgrounds in Round 2.

Victory will have short break following its Foxtel National Youth League campaign, before its PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria season begins on February 20.

Gates at AAMI Park will open at 4.15pm on Friday, with kick-off at 4.40pm.
