Victory plays out draw in Adelaide

Victory plays out draw in Adelaide

A late equaliser from Mitch Austin saw Melbourne Victory play out an entertaining 2-2 draw against Adelaide United on Friday night.

Summary

Besart Berisha gave Victory a deserved lead at Adelaide Oval, but a brace from Vince Lia saw the Reds ahead in the Round 3 clash.

But Austin came off the bench to secure a point for Victory with a fine low finish in the 82nd minute.

Victory made one change to the starting XI beaten in the Melbourne Derby, with Thomas Deng replacing the injured James Donachie in the centre of defence.

The visitors made a bright start and deservedly took a 13th-minute lead.

Leroy George’s superb set-piece from the left was met by the head of Berisha, who nodded in his first of the season.

Adelaide equalised with its first chance midway through the first half, Lia rifling a left-footed effort past Lawrence Thomas from the edge of the area.

Mark Milligan forced Adelaide goalkeeper Paul Izzo into a low save in the 34th minute before Isaias fired wide for the hosts.

The impressive Rhys Williams made a huge block to deny George Blackwood just before half-time as the teams went into the break level.

Both teams struggled to retain possession to begin the second half, but Adelaide took the lead shortly after the hour-mark.

A Johan Absalonsen cross from the left found Lia, who fired in a first-time effort from 25 yards.

George forced Izzo into a low save in the 69th minute before Victory equalised.

Berisha was denied on the turn inside the area but the loose ball fell to Austin, who clinically found the bottom corner to earn a point for Victory.

Victory is away again in Round 4, making the trip to the Central Coast Mariners on Sunday, October 29.
