Melbourne Victory travelled to McKellar Park to take on Canberra United, securing a 2-0 win and all three points.
Victory started strong in the Canberra sun, particularly finding success down both flanks early on.
Returning to her former home ground, Nicki Flannery tested Sally James in the opening minutes with a stunning half-volley, who palmed away the shot at goal for a Victory corner.
Victory would be sure to capitalise on this set-piece, with the young magician Alana Murphy delivering a wonderful cross into no other than Nicki Flannery, scoring her first goal in Victory colours and opening the scoring in the fourth minute.
Jeff Hopkins’ side continued to pile pressure on the home side, notably with Alana Jancevski’s cross-come-shot crashing off Canberra’s goalpost.
Canberra eventually settled into the game, with half-chances falling to both sides and some physical challenges. Victory managed to withstand pressure from Canberra, heading into the first cooling break ahead following an excellent start.
The game remained physical for the remainder of the first half; both sides battling for control in the heat.
Just as Victory’s one-nil lead seemed the destined scoreline for the first half, Sara D’Appolonia stepped up for her side.
Returning to the starting XI, D’Appolonia’s turn and bouncing long-range strike caught Canberra’s goalkeeper off guard, sailing into the back of the net to double Victory’s lead.
Cruising into half-time two goals up and ahead in key statistical areas; it was an ideal first 45 minutes for Victory to say the least.
Victory remained unchanged after the half-time break, determined to continue their excellent work in the ACT.
Canberra entered the second half eager to get on the scoresheet; particularly with all-time league top scorer, Michelle Heyman, keen to continue her goalscoring form.
However, the Matildas’ striker was unable to do so thanks to an excellent defensive team effort by the visitors.
Courtney Newbon controlled her penalty area, while captain Kayla Morrison denied any space for Canberra’s attacking talents.
Committing players forward, Canberra were caught on the counter numerous times in the second 45 by Victory; with notable efforts from Nicki Flannery, Alana Murphy and Rachel Lowe narrowly missing the back of the net.
Jeff Hopkins called upon Laura Pickett and Ella O’Grady from the bench around the hour mark, both providing energy to a side battling hard in the heat.
As the game entered the final stages, Victory managed Canberra’s threats to a tee, denying any clear chances on goal.
Ava Briedis entered the field for the final moments for the hard-working Rachel Lowe, helping seal a crucial result for Victory.
The 2-0 win for Victory provides an important three points in establishing a top-three position on the Ninja A-League Women’s ladder after Round Seven.
The result also represents a second clean sheet for Newbon and the Victory backline, who also impressively did not allow their opposition a single shot on target during the entire 90 minutes.
Christmas comes early for Victory Women, who will enjoy the win heading into a massive away fixture against Sydney FC on December 28.
