W-League preview: Glory v Victory

Melbourne Victory returns to Westfield W-League action with a trip to Perth Glory on Sunday.

After opening the season with a win over Canberra United, Victory was edged by City in the Melbourne Derby before having a bye in Round 3.

Victory head coach Jeff Hopkins said he was pleased with what he had seen from his team so far this campaign.

“The first game we showed a lot of spirit,” he said.

“I think we actually performed better in the second game, football-wise. We were a lot more structured.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough to win the game, but the pleasing thing was we created 12 or 13 chances in the game against a very good side so that pleases me a lot.

“Eventually, with the players that we’ve got in our side, if we keep producing chances, we’ll score goals. I’m happy with the signs so far.”

South Korea international Jeon Ga-eul made her debut in the Derby defeat, showing some good signs.

Hopkins said the 29-year-old attacking midfielder would only get better for Victory.

“Jeon’s a bit of a work in progress. The more she’s with us, the more she understands the role that we’ve got for her, the better she’ll get,” he said.

“She’s a real natural talent and I’m sure she’ll link up very well with Natasha (Dowie) up front, with the two wide players and also linking in defensively with our two midfielders behind her.

“We’ve got a little bit of work still to go there, but session by session, game by game, she’ll get better and better which is quite an exciting prospect.”

Perth is top of the table after two wins from three, sitting three points ahead of seventh-placed Victory.
