W-League report: Brisbane 6-0 Victory

Melbourne Victory suffered a disappointing 6-0 loss to Brisbane Roar on the Gold Coast in Round 5 of the Westfield W-League on Friday night.

Summary

Roar opened the scoring midway through the first half through Mariel Hecher. Former Victory player Emily Gielnik played a low driven cross into the box, finding Hecher who was able to tap the ball home.

On 39 minutes, Tameka Yallop doubled the lead for the hosts in spectacular fashion, curling a shot from well outside the box past Gaby Garton.

Yallop’s goal came just a minute after Garton denied Olivia Chance with an impressive full-stretch diving save.

Victory started the second half in promising fashion, when Melina Ayres rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike from inside the area in the 47th minute.

Despite Victory’s best efforts it was Brisbane who added another goal in the 64th minute, with Sharn Freier finessing a shot past Garton and into the far side of the net.

Gielnik added a fourth in the 76th minute with a looping header that beat Garton.

It was Gielnik again, adding a fifth in injury time, beating Garton in a one-on-one.

Brisbane completed the big win when Winonah Heatley reacted quickest after Isobel Dalton’s free-kick rebounded off the post, tapping the ball in for Brisbane’s sixth.
