Melbourne Victory was unable to make the most of its chances as it played out a 0-0 draw with Adelaide United in the Westfield W-League.

Jeff Hopkins’ team had its opportunities in its season opener at AAMI Park on Sunday, but was unable to find a breakthrough.
Adelaide also had its chances in an open encounter as both sides had to settle for a point.
Victory dominated possession in the first half and had the better of the chances, albeit without breaking through.
Natasha Dowie almost got on the end of an Angela Beard cross from the left, before Melina Ayres headed just wide from Emily Gielnik’s delivery.
Ayres fired over the crossbar from the edge of the area in the 31st minute, while at the other end, Casey Dumont tipped a Fanndis Fridriksdottir effort over.
Christine Nairn’s set-pieces were also a threat throughout the first half, but Victory went into the break without an opening goal.
Victory was again on top throughout the second half, with Nairn, Dowie and Ayres threatening.
The best chance fell to Dowie in the 72nd minute, but the Victory captain was denied in a one-on-one with Sarah Willacy.
Substitute MelindaJ Barbieri struck the post with a deflected effort from distance, while Ayres fired wide after a Nairn pass, while Chelsie Dawber put Adelaide’s best chance over the bar.
