Melina Ayres scored a stunning goal but Melbourne Victory was edged 2-1 by Brisbane Roar in the Westfield W-League on Friday.

Ayres struck from 20 yards for her first Victory goal, opening the scoring in the 22nd minute at Suncorp Stadium.

However, second-half headers from Clare Polkinghorne and Celeste Boureille saw league leader Brisbane to its win.

The result left Victory in seventh on the table, still six points adrift of the top four.

Victory made a bright start, dominating possession, and went close to taking a 17th-minute lead.

Laura Alleway met a corner from Angela Beard, but the Westfield Matilda saw her header hit the post.

However, Victory would open the scoring five minutes later in tremendous fashion.

Natasha Dowie put the ball into the path of Ayres, who ran at the Roar defence before unleashing a wonderful 20-yard effort into the top corner.

Brisbane built into the clash and almost levelled just before the break, only for Casey Dumont to make a great double save and Kristen McNabb to clear off the line as Victory held onto its lead at half-time.

Roar made the better start to the second half and levelled through Polkinghorne, who headed in a corner in the 56th minute.

The hosts found a winner with 10 minutes remaining, Boureille guiding a header into the bottom corner from a Carson Pickett cross.
