Melbourne Victory Head Coach Tony Popovic praised his team’s performance after a 4-1 win over Sydney FC.
Goals to Nick D’Agostino, Jake Brimmer, Jason Geria and Brendan Hamill secured an important win which kept the team’s premiership hopes alive.
Speaking at his post-match news conference, Popovic discussed a range of topics.
on the performance…
“I’m thrilled. We knew we needed a big performance today and the players delivered from the start to the end.”
“Overall, very happy. (Our position) is a fantastic performance and achievement from everyone at the Club, from the Chairman down, everyone should be very happy with how we finished the regular season.”
on Nick D’Agostino…
“He’s had a little bit of a shoulder complaint for a little while and fell awkwardly and landed on that side. He hasn’t missed any training or games due to the shoulder…I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
on breaking the winless run against Sydney FC…
“Tonight’s a great night for the football Club and our fans who travelled in great numbers to support the team.”
on Monday night’s City/Wellington clash…
“We’ve done our part. We handled the pressure very well and got the desired result. We scored four goals in a place we haven’t won as a club in a long time.”
“Now, we see what happens. It’s out of our hands but we’ll wait and see what happens.”
on Victory fans turning up to the Monday night game…
“If they do it would be wonderful (Popovic laughed).”
on Matt Spiranovic’s absence…
“Spira trained with us on Friday and did some training on Wednesday and Thursday but we just felt with the 10-day lay-off that he had and being an away game with travel, we felt we were best served to just make sure he keeps training well and getting ready (for the finals).”
