Melbourne Victory is pleased to announce the signing of Paraguayan forward, Fernando Romero until the end of the 2022/23 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
The 22-year-old joins on loan from Paraguayan Primera Division side, Cerro Porteno having spent his early career at Paraguay’s Nacional and Guairena FC before joining the team from the capital, winning the 2021 Clausura and competing in the Copa Libertadores the following season.
Melbourne Victory Head Coach Tony Popovic said he was excited to see what Romero can produce in the A-League.
“Fernando is an exciting talent who has the ability to play across the front line and we’re looking forward to seeing him play for our Club,” Popovic said.
“He is a young prospect who already has very valuable experience across competitions such as the Copa Libertadores and we believe he has the ability to bring something special to Melbourne Victory.”
Romero was also looking forward to his first experience of football outside of Paraguay.
“I’m excited to be able to join Melbourne Victory and can’t wait to get started at the Club,” Romero said.
“I want to show the fans what I can do as a footballer and repay the faith the Club has put in me to represent this proud Club. This is a new challenge for me but a challenge that I’m looking forward to and ready to deliver.”
Romero is the Club’s fifth new signing of the January transfer period, joining Damien Da Silva, Bruce Kamau, Connor Chapman and the permanent signing of Bruno Fornaroli. The Paraguayan will arrive in Melbourne in the coming weeks and be available to play once his international clearance is confirmed.
