Women’s Match Report | Victory take 2-0 win over Jets

In a statement bounce back, Melbourne Victory Women took all three points in a strong win over the Newcastle Jets in round 11 of the Ninja A-League season.

Jeff Hopkins made one change to his starting lineup in Brisbane, bringing youngster Laura Pickett into the XI.

Victory were keen to bounce back from their tough loss to the Roar, starting strong in Newcastle.

Emily Gielnik started the game on the right wing and caused the Jets’ defence issues with her speed and power out wide.

The Matildas forward put Victory in the lead in the 18th minute, firing a powerful strike into Tiahna Robertson’s near post after being played through by Sara D’Appolonia.

It was a dominant early spell from the Victory, firing seven shots to Newcastle’s zero in the first 30 minutes of the game.

Despite the control, the home side almost levelled the game after Lauren Allen found herself one-on-one with Courtney Newbon. However, the Victory ‘keeper had other ideas, producing an excellent close-range stop.

Victory doubled their lead heading into the half-time break thanks to a lunging finish by Rachel Lowe, finishing off a dangerous ball played across the box by Sara D’Appolonia – her second assist of the game.

Lowe’s first goal of the season provided Victory a well-needed two-goal cushion as the break approached.

Victory focused on maintaining their lead in the second half, defending the home side who took a more offensive approach.

The defensive unit showed their defensive solidity, conceding just one shot on target in the entire half.

Jeff Hopkins called upon Ella O’Grady, Sofia Sakalis and Rosie Curtis across the second 45; providing energy and well-needed rests for Nicki Flannery, Emily Gielnik and Alana Jancevski who have all played three games in just seven days.

Victory successfully shut out the Jets, keeping their fourth clean sheet in just eleven games so far this season.

The 2-0 result provides an important three points on the road for the Navy Blues, who further cement their third spot in the Ninja A-League Women’s.

Melbourne Victory will travel back to the Home of the Matildas for their next game, facing Perth Glory on Saturday January 18.
