Matthew Grimaldi is loving learning from Melbourne Victory teammate Juan Mata.
The attacking-midfield duo will hope to link up again when facing Adelaide United on Friday, February 21, kick-off 7:35pm AEDT, at AAMI Park.
Grimaldi’s neat footwork and timely pass cued up Mata’s go-ahead goal during last weekend’s 1-3 Melbourne Derby win versus Melbourne City.
Mata had earlier opened the scoring from 40 yards as the 37-year-old continues to lead by example during his first season sporting the famous Navy Blue.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Grimaldi detailed the Spanish playmaker’s impact on the group and his individual game.
“I think that’s one of the best derby performances we’ve probably seen. He just keeps bringing his A-game every single week, and it’s amazing for us younger boys to watch and learn from.
“For myself, it helps so much because I like to play in that same role as him when I come on.
“To watch how he controls the ball, but also off the ball, he’s not just running everywhere. He’s timing himself when he’s moving into position, and that’s the sort of things that I try and replicate from him.”

Grimaldi went on to assess Victory’s form throughout the 2025/26 season as he previewed the third and final Original Rivalry clash of the campaign.
“Obviously, there’s been a few ups and downs with the season, but we’re finding some form now. It’s really good for the confidence of the team and the changing room.
“It feels like there’s a derby every week for Victory, which is an awesome thing and the big crowds, which is amazing.”
