Arthur Diles has detailed the tactical tweaks that saw Melbourne Victory overcome Central Mariners in Round 22 of the Isuzu UTE A-League.
His team delivered a ruthless second 45 at AAMI Park on Saturday night, overturning a half-time deficit to record back-to-back 4-1 home wins, as the Boys in Blue ascend to third on the ladder.
Nishan Velupillay, fresh from his Socceroos call-up, equalised Sabit Ngor’s opener, before Juan Mata’s header put Victory into a deserved lead.
The hosts continued to pepper the Central Coast goal as the contest went on, amassing 34 goal attempts, and they added late goals through Nikos Vergos and Jason Davidson.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Diles explained how some instructions during the interval propelled his players to a big three points.
“We played a little bit more direct earlier at times, to not give them the opportunity to camp on the edge of their box. And we had a few balls in behind which started to stretch them and start to open up opportunities for us, and in the end, that worked, which was great. And once we got that first goal, we knew we’d come home strong.
“But the most important thing, and the most difficult thing, was to break them down first and foremost and get that equaliser, and then do the rest from there.”

After the first international break of 2026, Victory begin their final four games of the campaign with another home fixture.
They host Wellington Phoenix on Sunday, April 5, kick-off 3pm AEST, and Diles is already looking forward to the next big occasion.
“Momentum is really important at this part of the year. Home games for us are always special. We love playing here. We’ve got to make the most of our opportunities at home. We want to be dominant at home.
“Always want to be dominant everywhere, but at home, with our crowd and our fans, it’s a different feeling, and once you get on top of opponents here at AAMI, it’s quite a daunting task for the opponent to come back.”
