Melbourne Victory’s Courtney Newbon has been named the A-League Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year.
The 25-year-old was an ever-present between the sticks for Jeff Hopkins’ side, playing the entirety of the regular season campaign and every minute of the Ninja A-League Finals Series.
Newbon recorded seven clean sheets during her second season at Victory, which featured a catalogue of memorable saves, with some of the best coming in away matches against Wellington Phoenix and Newcastle Jets.
She follows in the footsteps of Melissa Barbieri and Casey Dumont in winning the award representing the Girls in Blue.
“I really did enjoy myself this year, it was a bit of a rollercoaster as we know, based on results, to edge into finals.
“I had a good year, I enjoyed myself and had fun, which is the most important thing.
“Kayla (Morrison) and (Claudia) Bunge, me and them together, we work together really closely. But it’s the defensive effort of everyone else in the team, making the recovery runs when they don’t want to in the 92nd minute – that’s the difference, and realistically probably what got us into Finals.
“I love Victory. I am really grateful for Jeff and the coaching staff for bringing me down and giving me a chance.”
Congratulations, Courtney!
