NPLW Coaches Notes: Fightback not enough for Victory

Melbourne Victory left themselves with too much to do when they visited Keilor Park SC Seniors, losing 2-1 in Round 18 of the NPLW.

A week on from their trip to South Melbourne, where they claimed a late draw, the Girls in Blue headed to the North West suburbs on Saturday afternoon, but were unable to end the month on a winning note owing to a slow second-half start.

Victory conceded in the 51st and 62nd minutes at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve, with Runa Komidori and Abby Holmes on target for the hosts.

The visitors refused to give up the fight, though, and got themselves on the scoreboard for the fourth straight game with two minutes of regular time remaining. Jade Tam’s thunderous effort hit the crossbar, and Ella O’Grady was on hand to crash in the rebound.

Speaking to MelbourneVictory.com.au, interim Head Coach, Harley Hamdani, who will lead the side while Jeff Hopkins is on annual leave, explained where the team fell short.

“The performance was disappointing and not to the level that we’ve come to expect from ourselves. We were not aggressive enough in our speed of play or in our intent to play positive, proactive football. We were afforded time and space on the ball but lacked the required intensity, particularly with young players competing in a senior competition.

“Encouragingly, we have a fantastically talented group who I know will individually and collectively want to display a performance they are capable and proud of against what will be another tough test this weekend in Box Hill.”
