NPLW Coaches Notes: Victory lose out at Preston

Melbourne Victory fell to a narrow defeat away at Preston Lions FC in Round 26 of the Senol NPL Victoria Women.

The Girls in Blue could not finish the Club’s maiden season in the competition by recording a win, being subject to a second-half turnaround at Genis Steel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Leyla Hussein, who scored Victory’s first goal of the campaign, was also on target with their last, converting from close range after fine work dribbling into the box by Sienna Saveska.

However, two strikes in as many minutes after the restart would swing the result, with Aimee Medwin and Valentine Pursey on target for the hosts.

Speaking to MelbourneVictory.com.au, A-League Women’s Head Coach, Jeff Hopkins, expressed his pride at the team’s efforts throughout 2026.

“Two lapses of concentration in as many minutes cost our young team all the points in a game we had been dominating for large periods. Another tough lesson to learn after dominating large periods of the first half and wasting some very good chances to increase our lead.

“It was not the ending to our season that we had worked so hard for, but I am extremely proud of every player that put on the Victory jersey this season.”
