Melbourne Victory’s Courtney Newbon has been called up by Australia for October’s international window.
The 26-year-old, reigning A-League Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, will be part of Joe Montemurro’s Matildas squad for next month’s matches in Europe.
Newbon’s first call-up, ahead of her third full season with Jeff Hopkins’ Victory team, puts her in contention for internationals against two-time world Champions Germany and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers Haiti.
Melbourne Victory Director of Football, John Didulica, commented:
“Courtney’s story is one of resilience and persistence and warrants celebration. Less than three years after being without a club and joining Victory as an injury replacement player on a three-week contract, she has been called up to the national team.
“There is no greater honour than a call-up to the Matildas. We hope Courtney has an opportunity to take the field during these international matches, and it can be the start of an exciting journey for her as a Matilda.”
