The prospect of playing three games in a week does not daunt veteran Melbourne midfielder Grant Brebner.
Melbourne Victory take on Brisbane at AAMI Park on Sunday, which is the first of three games in six days for the Victory, who welcome the Wellington Phoenix to AAMI Park on Wednesday before travelling to Townsville to face North Queensland on September 18.
While playing three games within a week may seem a tall order by the Hyundai A-League’s usual standards, Brebner is excited by the prospect of the matches flowing thick and fast.
“It’s not something that daunts me; it’s something I look forward to,” Brebner said of the congested schedule.
“I know a lot’s made of it over here and I suppose the travelling is a factor, but I’ve spent my career paying three games in a week overseas, so it doesn’t daunt me at all.”
“We had three games last year and I think we took the full nine points out of nine.”
“We obviously ease off on the training during the week, but I love playing the games, so I’d rather play than train.”
With the Victory managing only one win from five games this season, Brebner sees the coming week as the perfect opportunity to return to winning ways.
“We’d obviously like to have more points than we’ve got, but we are where we are. It’s very early in the season and we’ve got three games where we can hopefully but some points together and establish a bit of momentum.”
“It’s a lot tighter than when I first arrived here. I think it will be difficult for teams to go on runs so it’s important for us to stay with the pack. You don’t want to get too adrift because it will be harder for teams to make up lost ground.”
“A lot of teams want to beat us and a lot of teams raise their game when we’re in town.”
“We want to turn up and play like the Melbourne Victory that everyone knows. If we do, the result will take care of itself.”
