Melbourne Victory stalwart Leigh Broxham said his team continued to let itself down after a 4-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets on Thursday night.
Kosta Barbarouses put Victory ahead with a tremendous strike at McDonald Jones Stadium, but an Andrew Nabbout brace and goals from Daniel Georgievski and Joe Champness gave the Jets their win.
It came after Victory midfielder Mark Milligan was sent off for retaliating to a Georgievski tackle in the 28th minute.
“We have ourselves to blame,” Broxham told Fox Sports post-match.
“As a playing group, I don’t think we look back at anything and for it to be acceptable for this football club.
“Obviously a red card early on was detrimental to us and we keep letting ourselves down with things like that.”
Rhys Williams, who has starred in the centre of defence for Victory this season, came off injured midway through the first half.
But Broxham said that was no excuse for his side.
“We should be able to deal with an injury like that,” he said.
“We’ve shown before that we can deal with 10 men, but it wasn’t to be tonight.
“We made some silly mistakes that we should be able to rectify.”
