Academy graduate Will Wilson signs first professional contract

Melbourne Victory is pleased to announce the elevation of Academy player Will Wilson to a professional contract for the 2022/23 season.

The 20-year-old was part of the Club’s triumphant 2021 Australia Cup campaign, scoring a dramatic winner in the Quarter Final, before making his Isuzu UTE A-League debut this season against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Wilson joined the Melbourne Victory Academy in 2017 when he was spotted by current Under 23 Head Coach and Victory legend, Roddy Vargas at high school level.

The energetic midfielder made his debut for the NPL Senior squad in 2020 and was part of the extended A-League Men’s squad during the 2020/21 season before an impressive NPL season, Australia Cup run and 2021/22 campaign with the senior squad saw him earn his Scholarship contract.

Melbourne Victory Director of Football, John Didulica said Wilson is an exciting talent for the Club who has continued to grow under the Club’s Academy and A-League Men’s coaches.

“It’s always rewarding as a Club to be able to promote one of your own and give them an opportunity to build a professional football career,” Didulica said.

“Will is continuing to mature and has the energy and attributes that can help him become a first team player.

“He was a part of a young group that contributed significantly to our Australia Cup success earlier in the season and his work throughout the season and in the NPL has seen him rewarded with this opportunity.”

Wilson was also looking forward to progressing his development at Melbourne Victory.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the squad for the upcoming season and to continue to develop under Tony Popovic and all the coaches at Melbourne Victory,” Wilson said.

“Victory has been a big part of my youth development and it was very humbling to be offered a contract with the Club.

“It was an honour making my senior debut this season and being a part of the cup run and I’m looking forward to being part of the first team squad for another season and pushing for a spot in the side.”

Wilson will report for the first day of pre-season in late June as the Club prepares for its friendly against Manchester United on Friday 15 July at the MCG.
