Melbourne Victory is delighted to announce the signing of Thomas Lockyer.
The 31-year-old Welsh defender, whose CV boasts captaining Luton Town during its recent spell in the English Premier League, has agreed to join Giovanni Savarese’s team leading into the 2026/27 A-League season.
A 16-cap international for Wales, and part of the squads at UEFA EURO 2020 and the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup, he started his senior career at Bristol Rovers in 2013, where he would win back-to-back promotions as the Gas leapfrogged from the Conference to League One.
Following seven seasons at the Memorial Ground, Lockyer then headed to Charlton Athletic for a first taste of Championship action, and a year later joined Luton Town with his sights set on taking the next step.
This was achieved in 2023 when he captained the Hatters to the Premier League, where he would play 14 times in the club’s first top-flight campaign for 31 years.
Lockyer then returned to Rovers in October, and brought up his 300th appearance for the club earlier this year.
Melbourne Victory Director of Football, John Didulica, commented:
“We are especially pleased to have brought a player of Tom’s calibre, courage and leadership qualities to the A-League and to Melbourne Victory.
“He brings the experience of captaining a team in the Premier League and playing more than a century of matches in one of the world’s most demanding leagues, the Championship, as well as representing his country at the highest of levels.
“We are excited by the hunger that Tom has for a new challenge, and it is fantastic that he can bring this energy to Victory.”
Lockyer said:
“I am thrilled to have joined Melbourne Victory and cannot wait to get this next chapter of my career underway in such an amazing city.
“This opportunity excites me a lot, as I look to experience new things and challenge myself in a fresh environment. Now it is time to get to work and be ready for every battle ahead.”
Welcome to Victory, Thomas!
Lockyer’s signing follows Harry Sawyer, Harry Shillington and Philipp Ziereis joining Victory, Franco Lino returning on loan, Jack Duncan, Brendan Hamill, Charles Nduka and Jack Warshawsky agreeing contract extensions at the Club, and Mikey Ghossaini, William Kengni, Jack Mihailidis and Malik Olukhale all signing their first A-League contracts.
